GM & HEAD COACH TRUDI LACEY SAYS...
“The Sparks went on a stretch with Lisa Leslie and Chamique Holdsclaw scoring most of their points. Our team defense was better than our last game, but still needs improvement. The Sparks also went to a zone defense in the second half and that was pretty hard to combat."
“We made a lot of progress today. Our assist to turnover ratio was better than the last game. Overall, I was pleased with our effort. As a team we were more in sync. Our primary objective during the preseason is to get better and I feel that we are.”
INSIDE THE LOCKER ROOM
TAMMY SUTTON-BROWN
“We had lapses on defense. One thing that we need to do is to get more familiar as a team, since we have so many new faces. That will come in time. "
“Our team chemistry is getting there. It’s better than the Connecticut game which is a good thing. Having these exhibition games, really helps us to achieve good overall chemistry.”
TANGELA SMITH
“At the end, I felt we settled on a lot of jump shots. As far as the team coming together, I’m confident that we will be ready for the regular season.”
“As far as team chemistry goes, it starts in practice. I think if we continue to practice hard, we as a team will be fine."
SPARKS FORWARD CHAMIQUE HOLDSCLAW
On the Sting:
“Charlotte’s always a great team, because they’ve always had veteran leadership with Dawn (Staley). They’re going to be a really tough team to beat this season. I think they’ve made some great offseason transactions, getting Tangela Smith and Sheri Sam, along with (Janel) McCarville, the No. 1 Draft pick. Right now they are trying to fine tune some things, just like every other team in the league. We all have a lot of veteran players coming from overseas and some are dealing with nagging injuries, so we’re all just trying to put it together.”
SPARKS CENTER LISA LESLIE
On the Sting and their changes in the offseason:
“It’s always kind of the same, because Dawn is still running the show. They’ve got a lot of players that play the same position, a lot of big girls. I like the tempo they play with and Tangela Smith does a really good job on the offensive boards. Sheri Sam always does a great job of shooting the ball, as well as on the offensive boards.”
On playing against longtime friend and USA Basketball teammate Dawn Staley:
“She does such a good job of getting other players involved and finding the open player when she is off the court you can really tell. (With a big smile) You know, Dawn Staley is great player and whenever you guys are done with her, we’d love to have her.”
