Stinson Discusses Her Jersey Being Retired

On opening night against Chicago on Saturday, May 20, the Sting retired Andrea Stinson's No. 32 jersey in a halftime ceremony. Stinson met with members of the local media after the event and discussed the honor.

(On the overwhelming feeling when they called her name) I’m going to sit down before my legs give out. I had no thought in my mind. It’s just wonderful. There is a sense of happiness, and I am just glad to be apart of something special. The Charlotte Sting and the WNBA are very special to me and a lot of women, and it’s wonderful to be a part of it. It just makes me feel that all the hard work paid off and it helps for me to be able to tell the younger kids that they can achieve what they want to do – that they can achieve their goals.

(On her message to younger kids) Set your goals. Know you are going to have some set backs, but it’s all about getting back and trying again and doing it all again. Just set your goals and go for it.

(On if she thought she would be this overwhelmed) No, I didn’t have any idea. They asked me yesterday how I felt and how I would feel, but it’s like I went blank for a minute.

(On the response of the fans) Oh yeah, I love my fans. They are great and have been there no matter what. You know, we win some, we lose some, we start off bad and they are there. I love my fans -- I loved to play in front of them. They traveled, some of them and followed us on the road. It was always just great. There are some people that have had season tickets for 10 years -- that’s a commitment and that’s showing us the love.

(On the importance of having her family here to support her) My mom was here, but I also had family from Baltimore who drove down last night just to come down and celebrate with me.

(On if she ever saw this coming) No, like I said in my press conference, when they first called me to play in Charlotte, I didn’t know what to do. To see this 10 years down the road -- my jersey hanging up in the rafters -- it’s something that I dreamed of. Sometimes your dreams come true.
