Tuesday, May 9 was a busy day for the Sting. Not only did they host San Antonio in the team's third preseason game and announce they would be retiring Andrea Stinson's jersey on opening night, but WNBA President Donna Orender was in town to visit Charlotte. CharlotteSting.com caught up with Orender to get her opinions on the Sting, Charlotte Bobcats Arena and Stinson's honor.
(On the future in Charlotte) Looking around the locker room, I think the prospects are looking pretty good. I think what is going on here in terms of adding an unbelievable rookie is exciting. I think when we looked at the rookie class this year, there were some people who didn’t think it was as deep or as talented as it really is, and I know that by having a lot of these rookies like Monique, they’ve established themselves early on as impact players. I think with her addition and Coach Bogues up-tempo style, we’re in for a lot of excitement her in Charlotte.
(On fan support and sponsor support) Evaluating all the numbers that I see across the league, there is certainly new momentum generated here in Charlotte by this palatial building . It’s a really inviting place for families to come and enjoy an afternoon in the summer. With the kind of athletes that the WNBA and the Sting feature, I’m not sure you could get a better entertainment experience than they have to offer here.
(On her thoughts on the building) It’s funny because when I’m going around, I remember when I was here and it was just cement and I was here in a hard hat. I just think it’s a spectacular design and a place you want to hang out in – the amenities are just beautiful.
(On the team honoring Andrea Stinson) Isn’t it wonderful? I was just in the locker room with the players and went around the room asking them individually to tell me why they play this game. To a woman, they said what she said, “Because I love it.” I don’t know anything that is more authentic and genuine that our athletes translate to the fans, which is why I think the more people come and catch that inspiring spirit they all have. When you talk about inspiration, you look at a player like Andrea who has done an amazing job over all these years, is still as humble as she was when she first started, is obviously a fan favorite and has an amazing amount of records that still stand. I think it’s great, and the fact that she’s here with a guy like Muggsy Bogues all committed to Charlotte, says a lot.
