Mazzante Enjoying Training Camp

Just weeks after concluding a stellar four-year run at Penn State University, Kelly Mazzante’s basketball career skyrocketed to a new level on April 17 when she was selected by the Charlotte Sting with 18th overall pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft.

With the regular season less than a month away, Mazzante quickly joined other rookies and Sting veterans at the Bobcats Basketball Center on April 26 for her first ever WNBA training camp.

For Mazzante, a three-time Kodak All-American, her first WNBA training camp experience has been a good one. “I love it,” she said as she stood on the floor of the Bobcats Basketball Center after one of the Sting’s practices. “The coaching staff is awesome and the girls get along very well on and off the court. I’ve been having a good time so far.”

Camp has also been a learning experience for Mazzante as she along with the other rookies adjust their game to the professional level. “We are getting used to the atmosphere at the professional level,” said Mazzante. “The biggest difference between the college game and the WNBA is the intensity and the competitiveness and how physical it is at practice. This is a big transition and like any new step in your life there are going to be obstacles to overcome.”

Mazzante and her fellow rookies have not had to undergo this adjustment alone however, as the Sting have a core group of veterans, including Dawn Staley and Andrea Stinson who have helped explain the in’s and out’s of the team.

“Dawn and Stint have really helped us, especially with the little things,” remarked Mazzante. “They’ve gone at us too, but they’re always there to tell us what’s going to happen next.”

It has been this experience of playing alongside talented veterans that has been one of the things that Mazzante has enjoyed most about camp. “It’s been great to have this opportunity to play with such great players,” she explained. “I’m happy that I’m surrounded by great people and great coaches.”
