Muggsy Teams With Bobcats On School Visit

On Friday morning, September 23, Sting Head Coach Muggsy Bogues explained to Reid Park Elementary School students the great benefits which come by way of strong character and learning.

Bogues addressed the young children in grades K-5 during an assembly geared towards promoting the school’s Positive Behavior Intervention and Support Program (PBIS) and the Accelerated Reader Program.

In a joint effort from the Sting and Bobcats, Bogues, along with Bobcats players Alan Anderson and Bernard Robinson, addressed the crowd on having belief in one’s self and education, controlling one’s own destiny, and that anything is possible if the individual is willing to work for it.

"They say reading is fundamental, and that’s how we learn – that’s knowledge," Bogues said. "That’s the power. That’s the stuff we learn, and when we read, we progress."

On his beliefs of what true character is, the coach offered words which were much larger than his 5-3 frame.

"Going about your business, being respectful, being mindful of others and knowing right from wrong are all important things," Bogues said. "Showing great character means displaying it yourself."

The event was highlighted by a student step show and skit, a speech by Bogues, a question and answer portion with Robinson and Anderson and a visit by Bobcats mascot Rufus Lynx.

Reid Park Elementary Assistant Principal Denise Huff offered kind words after the event, showing gratitude for those who help to make the future brighter for her students.

"The staff and students of Reid Park are always excited to have community participants and volunteers come in and work with our children," Huff said. "We appreciate the Bobcats and Sting organizations and the players for coming today and showing our students that they are behind them 100 percent. They want them to succeed, not only in their reading adventure, but in life."

Bogues was excited to have the chance to participate in such an event.

"When you can help and have an opportunity to share some positive encouragement to the youth," he said, "it always makes you feel good."
