
The 2006 season was a breakout campaign for Kelly Mazzante as she averaged career highs in points, rebounds, assists and steals. Before she left Charlotte for the offseason, CharlotteSting.com sat down with the 6-0 guard for a question and answer session.
What was your childhood ambition?
I think my childhood ambition was just to be successful in something. I just wanted go to college, get an education, and play professional basketball.
What would you do if you were not playing basketball?
When I was younger I always wanted to be a teacher, but that’s when I was younger. If I had to quit basketball right now, I don’t know what I would do.
What’s your fondest memory?
I have a huge family, so there’s not just one memory. I think everything that I went through, I’ve had my family there and their support, so I know that I have a good support system.
What’s your fondest basketball memory?
In college, we made it to the Elite Eight.
What’s your favorite soundtrack?
Right now, Mary J. Blige.
Where do you go and retreat from everything?
In my apartment. We have our own apartments, so that’s my time to be alone and reflect.
Do allow anyone to infringe on that time? Do you turn all the phones off, etc?
No, the only person is Helen (Darling), she’s allowed in my alone time.
What’s your wildest dream?
To win a championship.
When was your biggest challenge?
Every year is a challenge, going overseas is a challenge, playing my third season is a challenge -- Every year is a challenge.
What’s your proudest moment?
Being drafted.
Are you a morning or an evening person?
I’m more of an evening person. But when I get up, I get up and go. I don’t get up early to get ready, I wake up and I go.
What was your first job?
I’ve never had a job, other than this. Working basketball camps is that a job? Well, I worked camps in college. That’s my only job.
What’s your perfect day?
Having a good practice, getting your work in and having the rest of the day to yourself to go shopping, go to the movies and relax.
What was your last purchase?
Helen and I went shopping and I got a purse, some accessories, and a couple of shirts.
What stores do you shop at?
I just go to department stores. I got my shirts from Arden B and I got my accessories from a Nordstrom’s or something, on sale.
Do you guys go shopping together often?
Yes, because overseas it’s tough to buy clothes. It’s hard traveling -- to bring them back in luggage and it’s really expensive over there. It depends where you go. Helen and I always go shopping.
What’s your favorite movie?
Beaches is my favorite movie.
What’s your inspiration?
My inspiration is just knowing that there are people who want to be in my position and that’s what keeps me motivated to be a positive role model and that I’m doing something special.
What was your welcome to the WNBA moment, where you knew you were playing professionally?
Our first game, sitting on the bench and just seeing Dawn Staley, our point guard, and watching the people that you see on TV for so many years and now you’re there, I think that was the first moment I knew.
What athlete would you pay to see?
I'd probably pay to see Roger Federer play tennis.
Are you a fan of any other teams or sports?
I’m a Yankees fan because there is a Montoursville native who pitches, but I’m not really a die-hard or anything. I just watch every sport.
What do you think you will do in 10 years?
In ten years I don’t know where I’ll be. I want to play basketball as long as I can.
Do you think you might want to coach at all?
Maybe. I’ve run my basketball camp and I’m trying to do that annually. I like coaching so maybe.
What’s your most embarrassing moment?
Ask Allison Feaster, she’ll know everyone’s. My embarrassing moments are with Helen, so you have to ask her.
Do you have any rituals or game secrets?
Nothing out of the ordinary, just try to get a little nap in, eat, watch TV, try to get off my feet, and listen to music.
Are you superstitious?
No, I’ve kind of let that go. I was superstitious in college and I thought I need to end this.
