2002 Sheroes: Breast Cancer Survivors and Advocates for a Cure

Photos:Denis Bancroft

On July 22, the Miami SOL, in partnership with SEARS, devoted a special evening to raise awareness of breast cancer, one of the most common forms of cancer affecting women in the United States today. The SOL declared that night’s game, versus the New York Liberty, SEARS Breast Health Awareness Night and featured a wide array of activities and events designed to increase awareness of the deadly disease, including giving complimentary pink ribbons and Breast Health Awareness bandanas to fans, as well as hosting a mini health fair with information tables from various local organizations that dispense information about the disease, and many more activities.

The emotional highlight of the game was the SHERO presentation, wherein the SOL continued its two-year-long tradition of honoring SHEROES at halftime by paying tribute to a special group of 100 breast cancer survivors and participants of the recent South Florida Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk, who raised funds for breast cancer research, as well as clinical care and support services for people suffering from the disease. In addition, the SOL also recognized all of the women in the audience who had been either directly or indirectly affected by breast cancer.

We at the SOL are honored to have had the opportunity to recognize all of these women for their courageous effort to battle breast cancer and for making others aware of how to prevent, fight and hopefully one day overcome the disease. Together, we can make difference and even save lives. By supporting one another and fighting the good fight, we can overcome anything.
