MONARCHS GUARD KARA LAWSON SIDELINED 4-6 WEEKS WITH RIGHT QUADRICEPS TENDINITIS

SACRAMENTO, CALIF., August 31, 2009 – The Sacramento Monarchs announced today guard Kara Lawson will be sidelined 4-6 weeks with right quadriceps tendinitis. Lawson was previously listed as day-to-day beginning on Aug. 20, but it has been determined she’ll need more time to rest and rehabilitate after which time she will be reevaluated.

“Kara is a great shooter and crucial to making our system go, as well as a backup point guard for us,” said Head Coach and General Manager John Whisenant. “This is a major loss to the Monarchs.”

Lawson appeared in 25 games this season averaging 24.2 minutes, 8.8 points, 2.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 0.6 steals per game. She was originally selected by Detroit in the first round (fifth overall) of the 2003 WNBA Draft, but was acquired by Sacramento in a draft day deal in exchange for Kedra Holland-Corn and the Monarchs 2004 second round draft pick. Through her seven seasons Lawson has appeared in 217 games and is averaging 23.3 minutes, 9.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 0.6 steals per game.
