MONARCHS GUARD CHELSEA NEWTON
UNDERGOES SUCCESSFUL SURGERY
Doctors Expecting Full Recovery

SACRAMENTO, CALIF., August 5, 2009 – The Sacramento Monarchs announced today guard Chelsea Newton underwent successful arthroscopic surgery this morning and removed loose cartilage pieces from her left knee. Monarchs Team Doctor, Kirk Lewis, performed the surgery. It is projected she will be out 3-to-4 weeks; a complete recovery is expected.

Newton was originally selected by Sacramento in the second round (22nd overall) of the 2005 WNBA Draft and started every game in her rookie season, helping the Monarchs win the 2005 WNBA Championship. On November 15, 2005, she was selected by the Chicago Sky in the WNBA Expansion Draft for the 2006 season. After one season with the Sky she returned to Sacramento through a trade deal effective for the 2007 season. In the 2009 season, Newton has played in 21 games and is averaging 15.3 minutes, 3.0 points, 1.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 0.9 steals per game. Through her five WNBA seasons she has totaled 142 games and is averaging 19.5 minutes, 5.1 points, 1.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.0 steals per game.
