If the old adage, “good things come to those who wait,” is true, then the kids in Lincoln should have a lot to look forward to.

On Tuesday, the Sacramento Monarchs joined with volunteers from Wells Fargo, Dome Printing and MS&E to donate a Monarchs Reading and Learning Center to the Lincoln Youth Center. “We’ve been chasing this dream for 11 years and now we’re living the dream. Today it’s a reality,” said Lieutenant Paul Shelgren of the Lincoln Police Department.

The Center received a complete makeover with the donation of a computer lab, Wells Fargo One-On-One Room, Dome Printing Reading Lounge, game room and sports-themed outdoor landscape project.

The Center was unveiled in an afternoon ceremony to the youth who will benefit from its services. “This is a place where kids can come and have fun in a safe environment after school,” said Monarchs forward DeMya Walker. “It really gives something positive to the youth of this community to look forward to.”

The Lincoln Youth Center was established through the cooperative effort of the Lincoln Police Activities League, Lighthouse Counseling & Family Resource Center, Lincoln Recreation Department and Re-Direct. The Center offers services for at-risk youth in the Lincoln area, and is currently the only after school program of its kind in the community. Services include mentoring, counseling, recreational programs, life skills and educational training and much more.

“We’re very proud to partner with these organizations,” said Bob Poole, co-owner of Dome Printing. “What Maloof Sports & Entertainment does for the community is just awesome.”

“When you have corporations and companies investing in their communities, it uplifts everyone. Then when you have talent the caliber of the Monarchs—coming to Lincoln of all places—actively taking part and playing with the kids, it makes the kids feel important,” said Lieutenant Shelgren.
