The Start of Something Great
Drafting a player like Seimone Augustus does not happen every year. She’s a rare talent who has all the tools and skills to become one of the best in the WNBA. Now, the #1 pick in the draft comes to Minnesota with plenty of hype and anticipation to begin the next chapter in her storied basketball career.
It was a memorable four years at Louisiana State for the 22-year-old as she helped guide the Tigers to three straight Final Four appearances while racking up countless individual awards on the way. Now she heads to Minnesota hoping to bring that same success into the WNBA.
“I am just coming in trying to make the biggest impact possible on the league and on the team,” Augustus said. “I am really trying to do everything I can to help the Minnesota Lynx make it as far as we can.”
Her prior success in college has put plenty of pressure on Seimone to succeed at the next level. Like any other rookie, she is still trying to adjust to the new style of basketball while also looking to live up to the lofty expectations of the number one pick. With basketball fans expecting nothing short of greatness from the Baton Rouge, La., native, it has become a tough job for Seimone to stay grounded and not worry about the pressure placed on her.
“The players on this team and the coaching staff have helped to keep me humble and focused and not having so much pressure on my back for what I have to do this season.”
One of the benefits for Seimone as she adjusts to the professional game is the mix of the talent the Lynx already have on their roster. Augustus feels comfortable in her role with the Lynx as the rookie because she knows the team already has established WNBA players who can help carry the load.
“We have a great team here with some really great post players inside and some great perimeter players so hopefully we will be able to put those two together to make a great team and compete every night.”
Lynx fans have plenty of reasons to be excited this year and it sure helps to have a player like Seimone Augustus on your team. A rare player who only comes along every few years will luckily now call Minnesota home as she starts what should be a long and successful WNBA career.
